EXPERIMENT 3 - THE CHURCH OF LIGHT BY TADAO ANDO

[ e x p e r i m e n t                  t w o ]

The biggest climate change known to mankind is about to hit planet Earth. When it does, humans would turn against each other for the possession of land, the biggest fight for survival;
the concept of my movie has been based on an apocalyptic scene, set in the post-human era. Due to the extremity of the climate, Ibaraki is covered in thick snow, and The Church of Light is nothing but ruins. Vegetation grows all over the beautiful wooden floors of the building, and the roof has been destroyed into nothing but wooden pieces. The concrete walls have also been taken down due to the heavy war weaponry. Rust and moss covers the beautiful details of Tadao Ando's work. A scene of pure tragedy and chaos, this is The Church of Light after a 100 years.

Week 14 : Lecture Review

This week's lecture was on the world of gaming. Different gaming companies were mentioned in this lecture, and the different roles were clearly explained. Throughout the semester, we have adapted several programming skills through programs such as CryEngine and 3DSMax. The valuable skills I have learnt through this course would definitely help with the presentation, demonstration and execution of my design work through computing techniques.

Still moving cameras, depiction of date in relation to the future.

[ life of pi ]

The aftermath of destruction, calm after the storm, and the filming of the landscape from a distance.

[ the dark knight ]

The usage of a cool scheme of colors, blue and mostly monochrome, providing a sense of darkness, conveying danger and tragedy.

[ ice soldiers ]

Using the element snow/ice as the theme for the landscape.

Week 13 : Lecture Review

This week's lecture focused on the 3D programs used in the field of architecture. Furthermore, we explored the decay of a building throughout the long period of time, and how it would withstand nature.
Technology has assisted the role of being an architect so well, and the further development of technology would continue improve the grade of the working life of an architect.

Moss on concrete panels, due to the exposure of the inner wall to moisture for a long period of time.

Week 12 : Lecture Review

This week's lecture was about pictures and movie trailers. We looked at several movie trailers in significance to the apocalypse. This has contributed to some ideas towards my final movie as my concept is in relation to the post-human existence. We also looked at pictures of abandoned buildings after tragic disasters.

Week 11 : Lecture Review

This week's lecture explored the destruction of buildings. Different situations of destruction were shown during the lecture. Majority of the buildings were destroyed through natural disasters. This has helped us with the idea of how we wanted our buildings to look after the destruction, and the situation of materials after it has been permanently damaged, in relation to the construction of the building.

Week 10 : Lecture Review

[ no lecture this week ]

We were told to further our progress on our building, by doing our research at the library. I've found specific information which relates to my building, which is the Church of Light by Tadao Ando.

Week 8 - [ G L A S S ]

Compared to other materials, glass is the most fragile of its nature. However, it is extremely malleable, and is perfect for the purpose of decoration and functionality. In actual fact, glass does not actually decay, but in a shorter period of time, it would be destroyed through the extreme weather or other factors. Glass would erode through the constant exposure towards heat. The only form of destruction glass would face is shattering due to extreme forces, melting due to the temperature (very high temperature) or crystallizing. In general, the glass materials in buildings would be shattered through the winds or natural destruction.

Week 8 - [ T I M B E R ]

Timber is a very strong material used for construction, and depending on its quality, in rare occasions timber constructed buildings has been built to last as long as buildings built with concrete. Timber could also withstand extreme weather, and timber has been used for traditional construction since. However, due to timber being a natural product, its characteristics would allow rotting and decaying to happen due to the exposure towards moisture. However, in general, timber buildings would fall apart due to the long period of exposure towards the environment, as it is a natural product after all.

Week 8 - [ C O N C R E T E ]

Cement is a composite material, which is mainly made up of : [ water, aggregate and cement ]. However, reinforced concrete is usually used for the construction of building elements. Reinforced concrete is a composite material, in which the inclusion of a reinforcement such as steel bars which have higher tensile strength, to counteract the concrete's lower tensile strength. However, over the long period of time, the steel reinforcements would begin to rust, and through expansion and flaking, this causes the concrete to crack, destroying the bond between the concrete and the steel bars. Furthermore, the cracks contributes towards the exposure of its material to the surroundings, causing moisture to enter, and lead to further rusting and decay. Over time, the concrete is taken down layer by layer through exposure.

The 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art was designed by SANAA. This building is primarily constructed of glass  and concrete walls. Surrounding most of its facades, the glass material would be the first to be destroyed overtime, exposing the interior of the building to natural elements. The primary structure would be tough to break down over the years of exposure, however, due to the long period of exposure, the interior walls would decay and then bring down the entire structure as a whole.

[ s a o p a u l o m u s e u m ]

The Sao Paulo Museum of Art, by Lina Bo Bardi is a primarily glass and concrete constructed building. The main silhouette of this building is a longitudinal structure, supported by two columns on each of its side. These columns provides the main building structure with an elevation off the ground. However, over time, the columns would lose its ability to hold the building, and would collapse due to its exposure to the natural elements. Furthermore, the glass would all be destroyed first, followed by its concrete structure.

[ t h e c h u r c h o f l i g h t ]

The Church of Light was designed by Tadao Ando. This building was built in 1989, in the city of Ibaraki, Osaka. The Church of Light is a rather small structure, with the major construction of concrete and glass. The concrete panels on the sides covers majority of the walls, however there are gaps in between each corner to provide light into the space of the church. Furthermore, there is a large cross located on the far side of the building's wall, which would eventually break down over time, and it is the perfect exposure to the natural elements. When the concrete walls break down, vegetation would start growing in due to the strong exposure, and then across the timber floor which results in rotting.

Week 7 : Lecture Review

Lecture this week was based on the list of buildings for Experiment 2. The next project was to study the decaying of the structure/building over time when humans no longer have the capability to provide maintenance,  buildings would decay over time. Several video clips were shown to show the conditions of buildings when left exposed to then natural elements from the surroundings after years to come. We began to take inspiration from the TV series, 'Life After Humans', and began to think about how we would like to take our idea of decay on the buildings we have chosen for our project.

[E X P 1] - T H E I S L A N D

[ f i n a l   1 2 0   s e c o n d s   t r a i l e r]

Based on the term "schizophrenia", which refers to a mental disorder where one fails to distinguish between what is real and what is not, resulting in an abnormal social behavior. The video shows an individual falling into a land of complete darkness, and then he proceeds to explore this unknown place through his imaginations, an inhabited, monochromatic landscape. Cold and alone, he tries to find his way around, out of his hallucinations. But who can really escape these dark experiences?

On the macro scale, a large "M" is formed on the mountain through a mud layer. There are four peaks to the mountains, which relates to the number "4"

On the micro scale, there are 4 turtles along the water near the mountains, and tree branches forming an "M" next to the bushes near the water.

To a scale in between macro and micro, there are 4 beach houses, and two aligned to form an "M" through the view of the roof. Besides that, in the foggy forest, there are 4 dead tree branches laid across the surface strategically, however hidden among st the thick fog.

My island is based on a monochromatic, and distressed scheme. A landscape based on several shades of grey, surrounded by thick dark fog and rain, I have included several scales ranging from macro to micro, of my letter-number combination, My letter-number combination which is "M-4", has been placed throughout the landscape. On the macro scale, there are four large peaks of the main mountains, and a large M formed in the shape of moss/mud across the surface of the mountain. However on the micro scale, the roofs of the beach house forms an "M", and there are four turtles around the edge of the water.

Week 5 : Lecture Review

This week's lecture was based on subliminal stimuli. In our island, we learnt about certain construction elements that the viewer/user will not be aware of. This refers to the subtle details, and inserting our letter-number combination. Furthermore, we looked at works which demonstrated this concept, such as the works by Edward Bernays. We use this concept to construct the subliminal stimuli in the form of a letter-number combination, ranging from a micro scale to a macro scale.
